A Successful Flea Market on a Beautiful Day

The tables were lined up on Ovington outside Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Center's business entrance. See more photos below.

For about the 17th year, Bay Ridge Center member Crystal Ferucci led the organizing of another successful flea market benefiting the Center. Since about 2004 she has been the backbone behind twice-a-year flea market fundraisers, usually in May and September. She had to take the last year off due to the pandemic, but was excited to be able to get back to work this summer to prepare for the September 18 outdoor event. It was a perfect day, with a blue sky, bright sun and warm but not-too-hot temperatures, making it a great day for passers-by and the curious from near and far to stop and check out the offerings.

Crystal reports that she starts the planning a few months before the scheduled event. There are 22 tables available for sale at $35 or $40 each depending on the size of the table. The income from table sales — usually around $800 — is donated to the Center, and the vendors then keep the income from their sales.

Crystal has a list of vendors from over the years, and once she has a date set she starts contacting them about renting a table again. She also likes to encourage Bay Ridge Center members to participate and announces any table openings at center programs. As the table sales come together, Crystal prepares advertising for area newspapers and gets a flyer ready to circulate in the community. Others help post the flea market advertising on the internet because Crystal works by phone and does not use a computer. From the advertisements she fields lots of calls from dedicated flea market shoppers from Coney Island to Queens.

Most years all the tables are rented, and vendors arrive at 9:00 am to set up their wares, which often include gently used clothing and household goods to jewelry and homemade crafts including crochet and knit items.

All this sounds like a lot of work, but Crystal says she enjoys keeping busy. Not only has she organized the flea market for years, but, until the pandemic closed the center for 16 months, she also organized the regularly scheduled trips that were part of normal Bay Ridge Center programming. We all hope that we’ll get Covid-19 behind us and get the Center vans back on the road so that we can keep Crystal even busier again! Thanks to Crystal and all the vendors for this successful day and special support for Bay Ridge Center.
